Blog #8 | Part III: Why Do I Feel Like an Imposter? Getting to the Root of the Problem

Feel Like an Imposter?

Imposter syndrome doesn’t happen in a vacuum. If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “I don’t deserve this,” or “They’re going to find out I’m not as good as they think I am,”—you’re not alone. And more importantly, you’re not broken.

You’re simply responding to deep-rooted beliefs that were shaped a long time ago.

Let’s talk about where those feelings might be coming from.

1. Childhood Pressure and Unrealistic Standards

If you grew up in a home where high achievement was expected, but praise was rare—or only given when perfection was achieved—you may have internalized the message that your best was never enough. Now, as an adult, even your greatest successes can feel hollow or undeserved. You might dismiss compliments, assuming others are just being polite, because that old voice in your head still whispers, “You could’ve done better.”

2. Comparison in Competitive Environments

As you advance in your career or personal growth, you’ll find yourself surrounded by other high-achievers. Instead of celebrating your place among them, imposter syndrome can cause you to compare yourself to others—and come up short. You might think, “They’re so much more capable than I am,” or “They belong here, but I don’t.” Even when you work hard and succeed, it can feel like you're not working as hard or aren't as talented as those around you.

But the truth? The people around you likely admire you for the very same reasons.

3. The "Sudden Shift" After Success

Imposter feelings often surface after a promotion, a new role, or any big step forward. While your growth and learning happened gradually, the moment of recognition or elevation can feel abrupt. You may still feel like the same person you were before the change—and that disconnect can be jarring.

You might think, “Nothing about me changed overnight, so why am I in this new position?” The truth is you grew into it. You’ve been building it for some time, even if it doesn’t feel that way yet.

4. The Real Reason You Feel Like an Imposter

Feeling like an imposter is often a sign that you’re growing. You’re stepping outside your comfort zone, taking risks, and trying something new. It feels scary—because you care. That discomfort doesn’t mean you’re a fraud. It means you’re expanding into your next level.
